If you're an avid cannabis smoker, you're probably aware of some of the legendary strains. Northern Lights, Sour Diesel, OG Kush, White Widow: we all know and love them for their exquisite flavour as well as their mental and physical effects.
However, there are several strains out there that have reached nearly-mythical status. Unlike the other cannabis strains we just listed, these are highly sought after for their rarity and their effects.
If you're interested in learning more about these rare cannabis strains, we've put together a list of the top 15. Continue reading to find out more!
15. Lamb's Bread
Also known as Lamb's Breath, this Jamaican strain has reached iconic status as the favourite of Bob Marley himself. What better endorsement do you need?
This is a cannabis strain with a high Sativa content, perfect if you're looking for a creative boost (like writing a new song). It's said to be one of the strongest strains there is, as well as one of the best-tasting.
Unfortunately despite its popularity back in the day, it's actually very hard to find now. It grows very quickly (approximately two months to cultivate), so if you can get your hands on some seeds, it should be worth the effort.
14. Amnesia Haze
This is another Sativa-dominant cannabis strain. It hails from Amsterdam, a city that definitely knows its quality weed. Amnesia Haze comes from a long lineage of powerful strains, making it one of the most psychedelic and intense strains in the world.
Unfortunately for smokers outside of Europe, it's actually very difficult to find. On top of that, it's a finicky plant that has a very long cultivation time, making it even rarer at dispensaries in the United States and Canada.
13. Malawi Gold
This is a unique strain because of where it originates from. Malawi Gold is traditionally cultivated by the Malawi on the eastern coast of Africa. It is actually one of the region's most profitable and common crops!
Easily spotted by its golden appearance, Malawi Gold is a pure Sativa strain. Smokers report a euphoric feeling, with very long-lasting effects. It also has a four-month time to cultivation, making it a fairly easy growth project if you can get seeds.
12. Magic Jordan
In the race to cultivate strains with astronomical amounts of THC or CBD, some of the other cannabinoids have been neglected. Not with Magic Jordan.
This cannabis strain has a high percentage of CBG (along with generous amounts of THC and CBD, of course), a cannabinoid associated with strong relief of inflammation and chronic pain.
Besides the high CBG content, this mint-tasting cannabis strain is known to have a very mild and pleasant high, perfect for anyone looking for an alternative to the mind-blasting effects of a Sativa-heavy strain.
11. Black Beauty
This cannabis strain is a real looker. As you can probably guess by the name, it appears to be black or very dark purple. This is one that you will definitely recognize if you see it.
But it has more going on than just its good looks. Like the Magic Jordan, Black Beauty gives center stage to another lesser-known cannabinoid: THC-V. Black Beauty contains a whopping four percent of it, higher than any other strain by a long shot.
THC-V is psychoactive, like its regular THC counterpart. However, it also counteracts some of the couch-locking and munchies-inducing effects that smoking weed is well-known for, making it a perfect choice for someone looking for an active high.
10. Jamaican Lion
Jamaican Lion is a winning strain, taking second place in the 2011 Cannabis Cup. It was developed by a grower to help with back pain, and it sure delivers.
This cannabis strain is a perfect 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD, and was actually one of the first strains developed to have a high CBD content.
Jamaican Lion is also being used to develop cannabis research. Because of its complex genetic makeup, it's being used to map the cannabis genome, which can then be used for research in states where weed is still illegal.
9. Hindu Kush
Kush strains on their own are legendary. Songs have been written praising the mighty Kush. For anyone looking for a good, relaxing high, almost anything with the name "Kush" attached to it is the way to go.
Hindu Kush originally comes from the Hindu Kush mountain range, where it is cultivated in an arid climate. This is a potent, pure Indica cannabis strain, and is arguably the daddy of all Kush strains.
Unfortunately, because it was used to cross-breed newer strains that we know and love today, the original Hindu Kush is extremely hard to find in its pure form.
8. Oaxacan Highland
This is one of the OG classic strains of weed, hailing from Oaxaca, Mexico. It was extremely popular during the 1960s and 1970s in the United States. For its time, it had a very high Sativa content and a pleasant, spicy flavour.
Sadly, it is considered to be basically extinct nowadays. The first death knell for Oaxacan was its use in hybridizing for stronger strains, and now it is plagued by violence in the region. However, strains such as El Dorado contain Oaxacan genetics.
7. Molokai Frost
This cannabis strain has an interesting backstory. It was originally cultivated in Hawaii by the now-famous leper colony on Kalaupapa in the 1960s, and brought to the mainland.
Molokai Frost is also unique for its effects. While it is primarily a Sativa-dominant strain, the effects settle into a more Indica-like state.
Smokers report a fast onset and euphoric feeling like the usual Sativa, but after a few minutes, one will sink into a deep state of mental and physical relaxation.
6. Thai Stick
This is another cannabis strain that seems to have disappeared off the face of the map. It was mentioned in a 1977 issue of High Times as one of the best strains... and then was never seen again.
There's also some debate as to whether Thai Stick was a true strain, as rumors circulated that it was regular Thai weed dipped in opium, or even served on a bamboo kebab.
However, attempts have been made to revive Thai Stick as a unique strain, with a heritage seed company selling pure Sativa landrace Thai Stick seeds.
5. Panama Red
Panama Red is another OG legendary strain that seems to have been lost to the sands of time. This was a well-known strain in the 1960s for its red appearance and psychedelic effects.
Like other OG strains, Panama Red has been hybridized and the original strain has been left behind. Some heritage breeders may have some available, but finding it available for purchase will prove extremely difficult.
We can only hope that someone will revive this strain as it originally was, for widespread availability!
4. Roadkill Skunk
This is one of the most infamous of all cannabis strains. Like others on this list, this is an OG strain from the 1970s, well-known for its pungent, strong skunk-like odour.
The stinky, unmistakable aroma fell out of favour with smokers, leading to decreased demand for this strain. However, in recent years there has been increased interest in heritage strains, and some enterprising growers have responded in kind.
It should be noted that debate rages on as to whether these revival strains are true Roadkill Skunk or simply smelly impostors.
3. Lasqueti Haze
Lasqueti Haze is a hybrid strain, coming from a cross between the now-infamous Lasqueti Island strain and an unknown Haze.
This cannabis strain is extremely high in Sativa content. Smokers are often warned to try this strain with caution, as it can easily bring on anxiety in people who are prone to it.
If you are a low-anxiety person looking for an extremely potent and cerebral experience, this might be the strain for you. It is rare as cultivation is difficult, but it isn't impossible to find.
2. Lime and Pine
This is one of the newest strains on this list. Unlike others on this list, it is rare specifically due to its flavour profile.
The combination of limonene and pinene terpenes is almost unheard of in cannabis strains, making the flavour of this strain very unique and highly sought-after. Since it is also relatively new, it is difficult to find in dispensaries at the moment.
Besides its flavour, it is a slightly Sativa dominant strain with heavy Indica influence, making for a nice balanced high.
1. Black African Magic
This is one of the most well-known rare strains of all time. Similar to the Black Beauty, this strain is notable for its dark purple-to-black appearance. It was popular in the 1970s and 1980s but has become elusive since then.
It is known for being a strong Sativa, with a heady cerebral high. Famously, DJ Short wrote about it in his article on OG strains, calling it the strongest he had ever smoked.
However, a debate rages on as to whether this is a unique strain trait or simply another strain expressing a reaction to growing conditions.
