CBD and Caffeine: Pros and Cons of Combining the Two

Bjorn Dawson November 10, 2020

CBD and Caffeine

CBD has blossomed into a pretty significant part of American culture. Many people, who ten years ago would turn away from a cannabis-derived product, are now using CBD to treat their pains and anxieties.

Because it's so new, though, there are some odds and ends that people are still curious about. One primary one is whether or not you can mix CBD and caffeine and still experience the same benefits.

We're going to explore the relationship between these two substances today, looking at how they interact and what you can expect when you use them simultaneously.

CBD and Caffeine: What's the Relationship?

In order to get a good grasp of how these two products work together, let's first take a look at each one individually.

A little refresher on the effects of both might help you contextualize the combinations a little better before we look at the CBD and caffeine pros and cons.

The Effects of CBD

CBD is one of the primary cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. The other commonly known one is THC.

There are a number of other cannabinoids in marijuana, but CBD and THC are the dominant ones that produce the bulk of the desired effects. CBD is the component that reduces pain and anxiety and leads to feelings of calm.

THC, on the other hand, is the psychoactive component that leads to the feeling of "highness." This means that CBD products do not produce a psychoactive effect, even though they often look and smell just like normal cannabis.

Another piece to keep in mind is that most CBD products contain less than 7% THC, which is a legal amount and will not produce the psychoactive effects of traditional cannabis.

Instead, you'll benefit from feelings of calm, pain release, and reduced anxiety. Naturally, everyone will receive CBD in different ways, but the dominant effects are the ones listed above. There are also a lot more medicinal benefits that CBD offers.

The Effects of Caffeine

Most of us enjoy a cup of coffee or two throughout the day. The normalcy of coffee has lead a lot of us to stop noticing the powerful effects it has.

Think back to your first few cups of coffee of all time. The rush and serious energy boost might have left you feeling jittery, focused, or somewhere in between. Caffeine tends to increase energy for a period of an hour or two, depending on how much you consume.

There are a number of ways to ingest caffeine as well. Most of us go with coffee or an espresso drink, but you can also find caffeine pills or get caffeine from soda and energy drinks.

The type of caffeine you ingest will play a serious role in how the substance hits your system and produces results. A cup of coffee might perk you up just enough to get your day started and leave you feeling fresh.

A large can of Red Bull could blast you into productivity for three hours, only to leave you dying for a nap. Caffeine pills could send you into outer space, only to find that you've finished all of the work for the week when you land back on earth.

Elements to consider are the amount of caffeine contained in the product, whether or not there are a lot of sugars along with the caffeine, and your sensitivity to caffeine in general. Typically, those sugars will have you crashing at some point.

The Expected Result

Most people think about combining THC and CBD and assume that they will just cancel each other out. The alertness from caffeine should just but heads against CBD's relaxing effects, right?

If our states of mind were on a linear grid, bouncing back and forth from sleepy to alert, then the combination might have you landing somewhere in the middle as you'd expect. Fortunately, we are much more complicated than that and are capable of experiencing nuanced moods and states of mind.

It's possible to be both relaxed and alert. It's even possible to be very focused as you sink into a state of deep relaxation. In fact, that particular combination tends to be what people talk about when they describe a "flow state."

This is the process of entering into a state of mind that provides a person with cool clarity in the absence of too much conscious thought. You get things done well, and you don't get caught up thinking about it.

CBD Effects on Caffeine

When you mix CBD and caffeine, you end up somewhere in the middle of focused and relaxed. Depending on who you are, you might be more sensitive to one substance than the other.

That could leave you feeling more relaxed than you'd like to be from the CBD and hardly alert from the caffeine or vice versa. You won't know precisely how the combination will affect you until you give it a shot.

That said, you can get a pretty good idea by judging your previous experiences with CBD and caffeine, respectively. If you're pretty sensitive to caffeine, you can expect to be very alert without as much of the edge. Those who become very relaxed from CBD might feel that relaxation with a little more pep.

Negative Side Effects of Caffeine

Caffeine, unlike CBD, is host to a number of adverse side effects to a lot of people who use it. This isn't to say that there aren't any negative side effects related to CBD, but they tend to be specific to small groups of people and absent in most users.

Four cups of coffee will make almost anyone jittery. Additionally, excess caffeine can produce feelings of anxiety in people. If you're already prone to anxiety, high doses of caffeine can ramp up those anxious thoughts, spark your heart rate, and leave you in an escalated state of mind.

Another one of coffee's blunders is that its acidity can wreak havoc on those with sensitive stomachs. The "gut rot" that coffee throws into the mix for some people is another thing that might be offputting.

This is unfortunate to those of us who enjoy coffee but have to keep a hold on our anxiety. It's also difficult to manage because there are times in life when you need a little help becoming alert.

Whether you're trying to get some work done before a deadline or you just need a little help waking up in the morning, coffee can be really useful.

CBD Could be the Antidote

The fortunate thing that happens when you mix CBD and caffeine is that those negative components have the chance to be diminished.

Again, it's important to know your relationship with each substance to get a true assessment, but it's possible that most of caffeine's pitfalls are eased with CBD.

The jittery body and anxious thoughts are calmed with the relaxing effect of CBD. The unfortunate stomach pain is benefited. What you're left with is a calm mind and the energy to put your thoughts to good use.

This can be a huge advantage when you're up late working on a project or trying to cram for an exam. It could even be a combination that enters into your daily work life.

Imagine drinking coffee throughout the day without feeling strung out and jittery by the end of an 8-hour shift.

Fine-Tune Your Experience

The last thing that we should mention is that there is a huge variety of products and options when it comes to combining CBD and caffeine. Both substances come in different forms, with varying intensities, and each method of ingestion will hit your system differently.

When you pair those choices together, you're left with literally millions of different ways to mix and match. If you don't find a method that works well for you at first, try mixing things up.

Consider a CBD gummy in combination with a cup of coffee. You could try growing your own CBD and exploring different ways to infuse it into your caffeine source. There's also nothing wrong with taking a CBD chocolate and melting it down with some espresso to make a mocha!

The options are almost limitless, and more products are hitting the market every day. Trying this combination could be the answer to your issues with caffeine. It might also leave you feeling unsatisfied, but there's no way to tell until you give it a try.
